Located on the north east of the island, Trincomalee is definitely a destination worth visiting. Approximately 257 kms away from Colombo, the distinctive landscape, food and art found in the town is like no other around the island. Relatively untouched by tourists due to the civil war, which limited the number of vacationers visiting the town, Tincomalee is refreshingly authentic.
Trincomalee is famed to be the location of one of the best natural deep water sea ports in the World; this was believed to be amongst one of the chief trading centers for the island, dating back centuries.
The beaches of Uppaveli and Nilaveli are arguably amongst the most beautiful beaches in the island, with turquoise blue water and white sandy shores making it ideal for sun bathing and snorkeling. There’s plenty more to discover besides the magnificent beaches including whale watching off the coast.
The historical kovils, ruins of ancient temples, Fort Fredrick and the seven hot springs are just a few of the major attractions of this town.
