Navam Perehera
First established in 1979, the Navam Perehera that takes place at the Gangarama
Temple of Colombo is known to be a spectacular event. Every February on the full
moon day, the Navam Perahera illuminates the city of Colombo. The Gangarama Temple
overlooks the beautiful Beira Lake, in the heart of Colombo city. The lively pageant
showcases traditional art forms of Sri Lanka such as dancing, drumming, ancient
folklore and colourful chieftains dressed in traditional costumes. Hundreds of elephants
with their mahouts from all parts of the country make their way to Colombo, to take
part in this much anticipated event. This perahera has grown in popularity over
the years, with thousands of spectators gathering on the streets to view this magnificent
procession.
