Kandy – declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, was the last standing Sinhalese kingdom of Sri Lanka. The city is unlike any other in Sri Lanka in terms of its historical relevance, culture, climate and its uniquely laid back atmosphere, albeit also posessing the urban buzz of a major city.
The Sinhalese kingdom of Kandy was overthrown by the British in 1815, after challenging the Portuguese and the Dutch invaders for almost three centuries. Nestled in the green hills, overlooking the charming lake in the centre of the town, the city is a welcome break from the capital of Colombo. The altitude (500 meters above sea level) makes it a breezy and refreshing change.
Wandering the streets, one marvels at the vast array of gem lapidaries, busy markets, distinctive Kandyan antique stores and restaurants. It is hard to miss the golden roof of the Sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic, which is believed to contain a tooth of the Budda. The tooth shrine is of great importance and is paraded around the city annually at the Kandy Esala Perahera which takes place in the month of August.
