Ayurveda

Ayurveda is an ancient form of medicine that was developed thousands of years ago in India. Directly translated Ayurveda means the ‘science of life’ and this herbal holistic treatment helps one discover the science of healthy living. Ayurvedic treatment has a lot to do with the delicate balance of three main elements found within the body. Every individual has to find the perfect harmony of these vital elements which include vata (air), pita (fire) and kapha (earth). If the balance of these energies is incorrect, it can lead to illness and disease. Therefore this ancient holistic treatment helps one find the perfect balance of these imperative elements leading to a healthy life style. With the advancement of modern medicine, the credibility of Ayurvedic healing has been hotly debated. However it is safe to say that Ayurveda in its purest form can lead to a healthy balanced lifestyle, and is now used to complement modern medicine.

The history of Ayurveda

Ayurveda originated in ancient India and was brought down to Sri Lanka in the 6th century BC. According to the Mahawamsa, or ancient chronicles, many Sinhalese kings were great promoters of Ayurvedic medicine. King Buddhadasa was an eminent ayurvedic physician, whilst king Parakramabahu was known for building a Royal Hospital. Remnants of these ancient healing grounds can be seen even today in Mihintale. The Sri Lankan Ayurvedic tradition is a mixture of Ayurveda and Siddha systems from India, Unani medicine from the Arabs and Desheeya Chikitsa, which is the indigenous medicine of ancient Sri Lanka.

Ayurveda still plays a major role in Sri Lankan medicine, with therapies and remedies being passed down through generations.
